Elizabeth Muir-Lewis ARCM, hon ARAM, hon FRAM

 

Elizabeth Muir-Lewis has had a long career in music as a singer, conductor, teacher and coach.

 

Trained at the Royal College of Music in London, she won a scholarship to study in Vienna, with the renowned lieder teacher, Erich Werba. She then joined Glyndebourne opera, singing roles and major understudies. She also began singing in recitals and with choral societies. 

 

After marrying the renowned tenor Richard Lewis in 1963 she continued her singing career, appearing with the Boston Opera, Washington symphony, Chicago symphony, Three Choirs Festival as well as the Ghent festival in Belgium, Wexford festival in Northern Ireland, the Paris festival, and numerous broadcast recitals for the BBC in London.


However, Elizabeth has not just that one talent. She began a writing career some years ago, and now has four published books.

As well as her many interests, Elizabeth founded a major singing award at the Royal Academy of Music, celebrating the life of Richard Lewis.

 

This is one of the two major singing prizes in the country, offering substantial prizes to many young singers over the years including Lucy Crowe, David Butt-Phillips, Mary Bevan, Clara Mouriz.  Roberto Ortiz. Katy Braye. Rodney Clarke. Allan Clayton and Don Jun Wang.


Elizabeth also founded the Eastbourne choral society which still thrives, conducting it for ten years including three European tours.


In 2025 she will conduct her old choir in Mozart’s “Requiem” using soloists who have won the Richard Lewis award at the Royal Academy of Music.
